Thalictrum aquilegiifolium, or meadow rue, brings a delicate, ethereal touch to part-shade borders and woodland plantings. Its finely divided, columbine-like foliage forms a soft, upright clump, above which airy panicles of pale pink/soft purple flowers hover from late spring to early summer. Each flower lacks true petals but is composed of a frothy mass of stamens, giving the plant its distinctive, cloud-like effect. The foliage remains attractive through the growing season, offering a refined contrast to broader-leaved companions like hostas or ferns.
Native to Europe and Asia, this perennial typically grows to 90 cm–1.2 m tall and spreads around 60 cm. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil with dappled shade and is fully frost hardy. While deciduous in colder climates, it may retain foliage in mild areas, dying back only after prolonged cold.
