Helianthus 'Double Yellow' is a stunning perennial sunflower variety known for its abundant, large, double-petaled yellow blooms that resemble golden pom-poms. With its tall, sturdy stems and vibrant flowers, this plant brings a bold splash of color to garden borders or wildflower meadows from mid-summer to early autumn. Its cheerful blooms also make excellent cut flowers, perfect for brightening up any indoor space.
Helianthus species are native to North America, where they are found in prairies and open landscapes. 'Double Yellow' is a cultivated variety prized for its ornamental value, making it well-suited to gardens across New Zealand.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil but is quite adaptable and can tolerate poorer soils. Ensure good drainage, as sunflowers dislike overly wet conditions.
Sunlight: Plant in full sun for the best growth and flowering. Sunflowers need plenty of sunlight to develop strong stems and large flowers.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to support healthy growth. However, once established, Helianthus 'Double Yellow' is moderately drought-tolerant.
Care Tips: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. Cut the stems back to the base in late autumn after the blooming period is over to prepare the plant for the next growing season.
Uses: This tall, vibrant sunflower is perfect for adding height to garden borders or creating a cheerful summer display. It attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators and makes a great addition to a cutting garden for fresh bouquets.
