A standout for hot borders and wildflower-style gardens, Achillea ‘Fireland’ glows with clustered blooms in ember-like shades of red, orange, and rust. As the season progresses, the flower heads soften in tone—mirroring the slow fade of summer light. These flat-topped umbels rise above finely dissected, grey-green foliage that forms a soft, ferny base through the warmer months.
Much loved by bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, this yarrow is more than just a pollinator magnet—it’s a top-tier cut flower, lasting well both fresh and dried. With its fiery palette and rugged constitution, ‘Fireland’ excels in sunny, low-input gardens where colour, resilience, and ecological value are prized.
Forms a tidy, upright clump to around 60–70 cm high and 50 cm wide, flowering generously from late spring into autumn. Trim back after flowering to maintain shape and encourage a late flush.
Origin: Bred from Achillea millefolium, a species native to Europe and western Asia and naturalised across New Zealand. Yarrows have a long history of use in herbal medicine and dyeing.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun
Tolerates a wide range of soils, including sandy or poor ground, provided drainage is good
Drought-tolerant once established
Fully frost hardy throughout Aotearoa
Yarrow’s botanical name comes from the mythic Greek warrior Achilles, who is said to have used it to treat the wounds of his soldiers.
