Brugmansia sanguinea is a bold, subtropical shrub or small tree grown for its large, downward-facing trumpet flowers in deep shades of scarlet, orange, and gold. Native to the Andes and naturally adapted to cooler altitudes, it performs well in mild New Zealand gardens, flowering predominantly through autumn and winter — a time when few other shrubs are in bloom. The foliage is lush and semi-evergreen in warmer areas, though it may die back in regions with moderate frost.
Reaching around 2–3 metres tall and wide, it adds drama and height to subtropical-style plantings or sheltered borders. This species prefers a rich, moisture-retentive soil and benefits from regular summer watering. In cooler zones, it appreciates some winter protection or container growing. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
Growing conditions:
• Prefers full sun to light shade
• Moist, fertile, well-drained soil
• Requires regular watering in summer
• Tolerates light frost; may die back but resprouts in mild NZ areas
• NZ flowering period: Autumn to winter
Uses:
• Ideal for subtropical-style gardens or sheltered borders
• Makes an excellent container or specimen plant
• Adds structure and seasonal interest when little else is in bloom
