Calycanthus floridus is a deciduous shrub prized for its richly perfumed, dark burgundy-maroon flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The unusual, magnolia-like blooms have a fruity, spicy scent that lingers in the air, especially in warm weather. Its glossy green foliage adds structure through the seasons before turning golden in autumn.
Forming a rounded, multi-stemmed shape to around 2–3 m tall and wide, this adaptable shrub suits a wide range of garden styles, from fragrance-focused spaces to mixed borders. Though its flowers can be cut and brought indoors, they last longer on the plant and are best enjoyed in situ where their scent can carry.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun to part shade. Moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Hardy in most New Zealand regions and tolerant once established.
