A graceful, late-flowering climber, Clematis viticella produces an airy display of nodding, star-like flowers in shades of dusky purple, violet-blue, or soft white from late summer into early autumn. Unlike its showier spring cousins, this species offers a lighter, more naturalistic effect — perfect for softening structures or extending the flowering season well into autumn.
Compact and manageable, it climbs to around 2–3 m, making it well-suited to fences, obelisks, trellises, or large pots. Its slender stems and fine foliage give it a gentle, weaving character, easily trained without overwhelming its support.
This species is native to southern Europe and has been cultivated in gardens for centuries. It is known for its vigour, disease resistance, and reliable late-season performance — especially valuable when many other plants are fading.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers full sun to light shade. Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy across most of Aotearoa.
