A whimsical woodland perennial, Dicentra canadensis produces dainty white flowers in early spring that resemble tiny pairs of upside-down trousers—hence its common name. These curious blooms dangle from slender arching stems above soft, finely divided foliage, bringing a light, romantic touch to shaded gardens.
Native to eastern North America, this species thrives in cool, moist woodland settings and naturalises gently over time. It goes dormant in summer, making it an excellent understorey companion for deciduous trees or later-emerging perennials.
Growing Conditions:
Prefers part to full shade. Needs moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Frost hardy and well-suited to New Zealand’s cooler southern and hill-country climates.
Uses:
Perfect for woodland gardens, shady borders, or naturalised settings. Grown for its early-season charm and unique flower form. Not suitable for cutting.
