A hardy perennial sweet pea with a flair for bold, summery colour. Lathyrus latifolius ‘Red Pearl’ produces clusters of rich reddish-pink flowers on long, scrambling stems through mid to late summer in New Zealand. Unlike annual sweet peas, it returns year after year, covering fences, trellises, or arches with a lush screen of foliage and long-lasting blooms. While not heavily scented like its annual cousins, the flowers still carry a soft, sweet fragrance.
This Southern European native reaches around 1.5–2 m in height, spreading 60–90 cm, and thrives in sunny, free-draining spots. Once established, it requires little upkeep apart from some guiding support. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other beneficial pollinators, and the long stems make it a valuable addition to the cut flower garden.
