A foliage perennial grown more for its ornamental leaves than its modest flowers, Persicaria virginiana 'Painter's Palette' brings an artistic flair to shady borders. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves are marked with brushstroke-like patterns of cream, green, burgundy, and pink — a palette that shifts slightly with light and season. Small, wiry spires of red-tinted flowers rise in late summer to early autumn, subtle but charming against the bold foliage. Though the blooms are not the main attraction, they offer pollen for late-season bees. Originally native to the eastern U.S., this cultivar has become a favourite for brightening woodland gardens and mixed shade plantings.

A herbaceous perennial, it tends to die back in winter in cooler regions, re-emerging in spring. It typically reaches 45–60 cm tall and 30–45 cm wide, forming a loose, slowly spreading clump.

Growing conditions:

• Prefers part shade to light sun

• Moist, well-drained soil

• Frost hardy
