Phlomis tuberosa is a robust perennial with upright spires of pale pink, hooded flowers arranged in whorls along tall stems, blooming through mid to late summer. The plant forms a clump of softly textured, silvery-green foliage that adds structure even when not in flower. Despite its common name “Jerusalem Sage,” it is neither from Jerusalem nor a true sage—it belongs to the mint family and is valued for its aromatic foliage and resilience.Native to south-eastern Europe and western Asia, this species is deciduous in colder regions of New Zealand, where it may die back in winter and re-emerge in spring. It copes well with dry soils and brings a strong vertical presence to sunny borders or gravel gardens. Bees are particularly fond of its nectar-rich blooms.
