Persicaria virginiana 'Variegata' is a distinctive perennial grown more for its foliage than its flowers. The broad, lance-shaped leaves are splashed with irregular patterns of green, cream, and white, lending brightness and movement to shaded parts of the garden. In late summer, slender stems carry tiny pinkish-white flower spikes that dance above the foliage and draw in bees and butterflies.
Native to eastern North America, this plant is deciduous in most New Zealand gardens, retreating underground during winter and re-emerging in spring. It spreads slowly by underground rhizomes but remains well-behaved. Interestingly, it’s a member of the buckwheat family — a curious connection not obvious from its ornamental appearance. A beautiful choice for woodland edges, mixed borders, or beneath trees where its foliage lights up darker spots.

• Prefers part to full shade
• Moist, well-drained soil
• Frost hardy
• Deciduous in colder areas
