Rodgersia pinnata is a lush, architectural perennial valued for its bold foliage and airy summer blooms. Large, deeply lobed, glossy green leaves provide textural interest from spring through autumn, creating a dramatic backdrop for tall plumes of creamy-white to pale pink flowers that emerge in early to mid-summer. Despite its exotic appearance, it is remarkably tough in cool, damp New Zealand gardens. The leaves gradually fade and die back over winter, returning anew in spring.

This Asian native grows 90–120 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide, forming an impressive clump over time. It thrives in moist, shaded spots and works beautifully alongside ferns, hostas, and astilbes. Its foliage was once used in some parts of Asia for wrapping food — a curious cultural footnote to its ornamental value.

Growing conditions:

• Prefers partial to full shade

• Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil

• Fully frost hardy

• Deciduous in most NZ gardens

Uses:

• Excellent for woodland borders, shade gardens, or wet areas

• Attracts pollinators such as bees
