A handsome and time-honoured perennial long valued in both gardens and herbal medicine. Stachys officinalis forms tidy mounds of textured, crinkled leaves, from which emerge upright spikes of rich pink to purplish flowers from late spring through summer. Traditionally used in medieval apothecaries for everything from wounds to anxiety, betony remains a beautiful and useful garden plant today.
It reaches 45–60 cm in height and spreads around 30–45 cm, with neat, clump-forming growth. While tolerant of a range of soils, it prefers well-drained, moderately fertile ground and will flower best in sun or part shade. A hardy herbaceous, deciduous perennial that is well suited to cottage gardens, borders, or as a companion to medicinal herbs.
