Corydalis flexuosa is a woodland gem prized for its electric blue flowers — a rare hue in the shade garden. Blooming in mid to late spring, the tubular, two-lipped flowers rise in airy clusters above soft, ferny, blue-green foliage. A second flush often appears in autumn, especially in cooler areas, offering a surprising encore as the garden begins to quieten down. This plant contains natural alkaloids traditionally studied for their medicinal potential, though it's now grown purely for its ornamental charm.
A native of high-altitude woodlands in western China, Corydalis flexuosa prefers cool, moist, partially shaded sites with rich, humus-filled soil. It forms loose clumps, slowly spreading to create low drifts of colour. Its fleeting beauty, garden rarity, and unusual colouring make it a quiet showstopper in shaded borders.
Growing conditions:
• Prefers part shade to dappled sun
• Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil
• Frost hardy but dislikes prolonged heat or dryness
• Evergreen above -5 °C
Uses:
• Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, or under deciduous trees
• Adds rare blue tones and a soft, ephemeral feel
• Attracts early pollinators
