Often mistaken for a large snowdrop, Leucojum aestivum — commonly
called Summer Snowflake — is a graceful bulbous perennial that produces nodding
white bell-shaped flowers, each marked with a soft green dot on every petal
tip. Flowering from mid to late spring, it rises elegantly above lush,
strap-like foliage and forms long-lived clumps that increase steadily over
time.

Though its Latin translation is Summer white, Leucojum aestivum
actually flowers in spring. Native to damp meadows and stream banks across
Europe and parts of the Middle East, it thrives in moist, fertile soil and is
especially well suited to woodland edges or alongside ponds. Its quiet beauty
and reliability have made it a favourite in heritage gardens for centuries.

Grows to about 40–60 cm tall and 20–30 cm wide. Fully frost hardy and summer
deciduous.

Growing conditions:

• Prefers full sun to part shade

• Moist, well-drained to boggy soil

• Frost hardy

• Deciduous (dies back below -5 °C)

• Ideal for naturalising in damp borders, woodland gardens, or near water

• Long-lived and low-maintenance

• Attractive to early pollinators
