An airy, graceful perennial with tall, wiry stems topped by slender, crimson catkin-like flowers that sway with the wind from mid to late summer. Sanguisorba tenuifolia ‘Rubra’ adds light movement and architectural height to borders, meadows, and naturalistic plantings without overpowering neighbouring plants. Its finely cut, ferny foliage forms a soft green mound at the base, contrasting beautifully with the tall flower wands.

Native to East Asia, this moisture-loving species is especially effective in larger plantings or where a sense of wild elegance is desired. In traditional Japanese gardens, it has long been appreciated for its textural quality and seasonal rhythm. Though tall, it rarely needs staking, and its long flowering stems make it useful for informal floral arrangements.

Grows to approximately 1.5–2 m tall, with a spread of 60–80 cm. Fully frost hardy.

Growing conditions:

• Prefers full sun to part shade

• Moist, well-drained soil

• Frost hardy

• Deciduous below -5 °C

Uses:

• Ideal for naturalistic borders, wet meadows, or alongside ponds

• Adds vertical movement and texture

• Attracts bees and other pollinators

• Can be used in wild-style cut flower arrangements
