Tropical yam, also known as Dioscorea alata, is a tropical perennial vine native to Southeast Asia and other warm regions. It produces edible tubers that are commonly harvested for their starchy, slightly sweet flesh. These tubers are often used in cooking and can be boiled, baked, or roasted, similar to sweet potatoes. The plant features large, heart-shaped leaves and climbing tendrils, making it a unique addition to gardens or edible landscapes.
Tropical yam grows to a height of 1–2 meters when supported by trellises or other structures. The plant thrives in warm climates and requires well-drained, fertile soil to grow successfully.
