Wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca), also known as alpine strawberry, is a low-growing perennial that produces small, sweet red berries. This plant is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and thrives in New Zealand’s climates. Wild strawberry is known for its resilience and ability to grow in a range of conditions, making it a great option for ground cover or in containers.It typically grows to a height of 15–20 cm with a spread of up to 30 cm. The plant produces small, white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by vibrant red strawberries that are smaller than cultivated varieties but pack a lot of flavour.
Country of Origin: Native to temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America
Growing conditions:
Prefers full sun to partial shade
Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil
Frost hardy
Uses:
Ideal for ground cover or in hanging baskets and containers
The fruit is edible and can be eaten fresh or used in jams, desserts, or baked goods
