The Japanese raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis) is a deciduous tree native to East Asia, including Japan, China, and Korea. It is grown for its distinctive fruit and attractive, spreading foliage. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in summer, followed by large clusters of raisin-like fruits, which are actually swollen petioles (stalks), not true fruit. These sweet-tasting "raisins" are edible and often eaten fresh or dried.

Growing to a height of 10–15 meters, the Japanese raisin tree has a wide, rounded crown that provides ample shade in the garden. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade.
