Lily of the Valley is a classic woodland perennial cherished for its sweet fragrance and dainty, nodding white bells that bloom in mid to late spring. These tiny, waxy flowers are held on short, arching stems above lush, lance-shaped green foliage. Despite their delicate appearance, the plants are surprisingly robust and long-lived, gradually forming spreading clumps via underground rhizomes. Once established, they provide a carpet of green followed by a burst of perfumed flowers each spring.
Native to Europe and temperate parts of Asia, Convallaria majalis thrives in dappled or full shade and prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is frost hardy and fully deciduous, dying back after flowering and reemerging with renewed vigour the following season. Though charming in appearance, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and should be handled with care.
Once widely used in bridal bouquets and spring festivals, Lily of the Valley remains a beloved symbol of purity and renewal and its enduring popularity is as much due to its scent as its beauty.
