Eriocapitella japonica, formerly known as Anemone japonica, is a graceful, late-season perennial that brings a sense of movement and lightness to the garden. Tall, wiry stems hold simple, saucer-shaped flowers above deep green, deeply cut foliage. The blooms, appearing from late summer into autumn, range from soft pink to rich rose, each with a prominent ring of golden stamens at the centre. This plant is particularly valued for its ability to flower when much else is fading, extending the season of interest in garden borders. Though it looks delicate, Eriocapitella is surprisingly robust, forming long-lived clumps once established. It prefers partial shade and humus-rich, well-drained soil but can tolerate full sun in cooler areas. The genus name Eriocapitella means "woolly little head," referencing the fuzzy seed heads that follow flowering.
