Allium senescens subsp. montanum

Allium senescens subsp. montanum is a delightful ornamental onion that forms neat clumps of twisted, blue-green foliage topped by rounded heads of soft lilac-pink flowers in late summer. Native to the dry grasslands and rocky slopes of Europe and Asia, it is exceptionally hardy and tolerant of drought once established. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract a steady stream of bees and other pollinators at a time when many other perennials are beginning to fade. The leaves have a mild onion flavour and are also edible.
