Commonly known as Scots lovage, Ligusticum scoticum is a handsome coastal perennial with glossy, divided foliage and domed clusters of creamy-white flowers through summer. Native to the windswept coastlines of northern Europe, including Scotland, it is remarkably tolerant of salt spray and exposed conditions. The aromatic leaves have a flavour reminiscent of celery and lovage and have traditionally been used as a culinary herb in coastal communities. Its neat habit and resilience make it a valuable addition to edible gardens, coastal plantings, and pollinator-friendly borders.
