Allium rosenbachianum
$26.00
A spectacular ornamental onion, Allium rosenbachianum sends up strong, upright stems crowned with large globes of luminous rose-purple flowers. Each flower head is packed with dozens of tiny stars, creating a rich, jewel-like display that appears to float above the border in late spring and early summer. The prominent violet stamens give the blooms an especially sparkling, intricate appearance when viewed closely.
Native to Central Asia and western Pakistan, this uncommon bulbous perennial is exceptionally hardy and returns reliably each year when given good drainage. Its broad, grey-green leaves emerge before the flowers and naturally begin to fade as the tall stems reach their peak.
Height: Approximately 70–100 cm
Spread: Approximately 20–30 cm
Flower head: Up to approximately 10 cm across
Plant in full sun in fertile, free-draining soil. It tolerates summer dryness once dormant but dislikes sitting in wet soil, particularly through winter. The bulbs can remain undisturbed in the ground for many years and are best planted among lower perennials, grasses or groundcovers that disguise the foliage as it fades and gives a contrasting display.
