Bring your dream garden to life

Geranium phaeum

$16.90

Out of stock

Small dusky maroon-purple flowers on slender stems above soft, deeply divided foliage from late spring into early summer. Native to European woodlands and mountain meadows, this hardy cranesbill geranium is exceptionally useful for bringing colour and movement into shaded parts of the garden. Its botanical name phaeum means dark or dusky, inspiring the old common name “mourning widow”, although the plant itself is anything but gloomy when its flowers dance above the foliage. It is a very frost-hardy, deciduous perennial with a relaxed clumping habit and may gently self-seed where conditions suit. Height 60–80 cm.

Growing Conditions
Plant in partial or full shade in average to fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates sun where moisture is reliable and copes with difficult shade better than many flowering perennials. Cut back after flowering to encourage fresh foliage and limit self-seeding if desired.
Uses
Ideal beneath trees and shrubs, through woodland gardens, in shaded borders and for naturalistic planting.
