Limonium perezii ‘Blue Smoke’

Large, branching heads of violet-blue and white flowers rise above broad, leathery leaves, creating a cloud of colour from late spring through summer and autumn. Native to the rocky coasts of the Canary Islands, this sea lavender thrives in sun, salt-laden air and freely draining ground. What appears to be the blue flower is largely its papery calyx, which remains colourful long after the tiny true flower has faded—one reason the stems retain their colour so beautifully when dried. ‘Blue Smoke’ is an evergreen perennial in mild, sheltered gardens, although hard inland frosts may damage its foliage. It makes an outstanding fresh and dried cut flower. Height Approximately 90cm.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun in sandy, gravelly or otherwise freely draining soil. Drought tolerant once established and well suited to coastal conditions. Avoid wet winter ground, heavy feeding and excess irrigation, which can produce weak growth. Shelter from severe inland frosts.
Uses
Excellent for coastal gardens, dry borders, gravel gardens, large containers and fresh or dried flower arrangements.
