Prunella grandiflora Purple

Out of stock
Rich purple flower spikes above a low, spreading mat of green foliage from late spring through summer, often continuing intermittently into autumn. Native to Europe and western Asia, this larger-flowered relative of common self-heal is tough, very frost hardy and useful wherever a flowering groundcover is needed. The name self-heal reflects the centuries-old traditional use of plants in this genus as medicinal herbs, although this selection is grown primarily for its ornamental flowers. It remains evergreen through ordinary winters, with older foliage easily tidied in early spring, and its nectar-rich blooms are readily visited by bees. Height 20–30 cm.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in average to fertile, freely draining soil. It tolerates short dry periods once established. Trim after the main flowering flush to encourage tidier growth and repeat blooming.
Uses
Ideal as flowering groundcover, along border fronts and paths, in rockeries, beneath open shrubs and through pollinator-friendly planting.
