Schizophragma hydrangeoides

Out of stock
Large, lacecap-like clusters of creamy-white flowers spread across this elegant self-clinging vine in midsummer, held against a leafy covering of heart-shaped green foliage. Native to the forests of Japan and Korea, it climbs tree trunks and rock faces using aerial roots before its leaves turn yellow and fall in autumn. Although closely resembling a climbing hydrangea, each showy outer flower carries a single enlarged white bract rather than the four usually seen on hydrangeas, giving the blooms a lighter, more open appearance. This very frost-hardy, deciduous climber can be slow to establish but eventually forms an impressive, long-lived covering. Height 8–12 m when mature.
Growing Conditions
Plant in partial shade or morning sun in humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Provide initial support against a large tree, sturdy pergola or structurally sound wall until its aerial roots attach. Protect from drying winds and water regularly while establishing. Flowers best with some sunlight.
Uses
Ideal for covering large shaded walls, mature tree trunks, substantial pergolas and other strong vertical structures.
