Large, finely fringed white flowers, sometimes touched with the faintest pink blush, are carried above a compact rosette of deep green leaves from summer into early autumn. Although known as Stokes’ aster, the broad blooms have the ruffled appearance of oversized cornflowers. ‘White Star’, also known as ‘Träumerei’, was introduced by German seed specialists Jelitto in 1990 and remains a valuable compact white form of this southeastern North American perennial. Frost hardy and evergreen to semi-evergreen, it flowers for longer when deadheaded and produces excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. Height 30–40 cm.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun or light partial shade in average to fertile, freely draining soil. It tolerates moderate dryness once established but performs best with some summer moisture. Avoid waterlogged winter ground. Remove spent flowers regularly to extend the flowering season.
Uses
Ideal for border fronts, cottage gardens, pollinator planting, containers and cut-flower gardens. The blooms last well in fresh arrangements.
