Large, deeply lobed leaves resembling those of an oak provide a bold backdrop for conical white flower panicles from midsummer into autumn. The blooms gradually develop soft pink and dusky rose tones, while the foliage turns rich shades of bronze, crimson and purple before falling. Native to the southeastern United States, this very frost-hardy, deciduous shrub grows approximately 1.5–2 m tall and broad. As the plant matures, its stems develop peeling cinnamon-brown bark, providing winter character after the leaves have fallen. The long-lasting flower panicles can also be enjoyed in fresh or dried arrangements.
Growing Conditions
Plant in morning sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It prefers acidic to neutral conditions and protection from intense afternoon sun. Water regularly while establishing; mature plants tolerate moderate dryness. Prune only when necessary and do so soon after flowering.
Uses
Excellent as a specimen shrub, within woodland and mixed-shrub borders, for autumn foliage displays and for fresh or dried flower arrangements.
