Towering foxtail-like flower spikes rise to approximately 1.2–1.5 m above a rosette of narrow green leaves in early summer, with hundreds of small flowers opening progressively from the bottom upwards. As no cultivar has been specified, flower colour may vary through pastel pink, yellow, apricot and pale orange. This garden hybrid was created by crossing the Central Asian species Eremurus olgae and E. stenophyllus, and the name isabellinus refers to the soft, creamy-fawn colouring of the original hybrid. It is a very frost-hardy, deciduous perennial with unusual starfish-like fleshy roots, and its tall stems make exceptional cut flowers.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun in deep, fertile, sandy or gravelly soil with excellent drainage. Spread the fleshy roots carefully over a shallow mound of soil or sand, keeping the crown close to the surface. Avoid root disturbance, winter waterlogging and cultivation around the crown. The foliage naturally dies away during or shortly after flowering.
Uses
Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, dramatic vertical planting and large cut-flower arrangements.
