Upright spikes of white flowers rise above glossy, divided foliage in early summer, forming a handsome clump approximately 75–100 cm tall. Native across southern Europe and Asia, this very frost-hardy, deciduous perennial is commonly known as the gas plant because its lemon-scented foliage and seed pods release volatile oils that can briefly ignite around the plant on a hot, still evening without burning the foliage. It is slow to establish but exceptionally long-lived once settled, developing a deep root system and strongly resenting transplantation.
Contact with the plant can cause severe blistering when skin is subsequently exposed to sunlight, so gloves and covered skin should always be used when handling it.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun or light partial shade in fertile, freely draining soil, preferably neutral to alkaline. It becomes drought tolerant once established. Choose its permanent position carefully and avoid planting beside narrow paths or places where people and children may brush against the foliage.
Uses
Best suited to sunny perennial borders, cottage gardens and specialist plant collections where it can remain undisturbed and accidental contact is unlikely.
