Daphne odora

Out of stock
Clusters of intensely fragrant pink and white flowers open among glossy, dark green foliage from late winter into early spring, filling the surrounding garden with their rich perfume. Native to China, Vietnam and Taiwan, Daphne odora is aptly named, as odora refers to its powerful fragrance. This slow-growing evergreen shrub eventually reaches approximately 1–1.5 m tall and wide, forming a compact, rounded specimen that is especially valuable near paths, entrances and windows. It is frost hardy in a sheltered position, although severe frost and exposed winds can damage its flowers and foliage. Red berries may follow flowering, but all parts are toxic if eaten.
Growing Conditions
Plant in morning sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but freely draining soil. Shelter from harsh afternoon sun and cold winds. Daphne dislikes waterlogged ground, root disturbance and being transplanted, so choose its permanent position carefully. Keep pruning to a minimum.
Uses
Ideal as a fragrant specimen near entrances, paths, patios and frequently opened windows, or within sheltered woodland and mixed-shrub borders.
