Nodding violet-blue bells rise above coarse, nettle-like foliage from midsummer into early autumn, bringing colour to both sunny and partially shaded gardens. Native from Europe through central Asia, this robust bellflower grows approximately 80-100 cm tall and is commonly known as nettle-leaved bellflower or throatwort. The latter name comes from the Greek trachelos, meaning neck, reflecting its historic use as a traditional remedy for sore throats. It is a very frost-hardy, deciduous perennial that forms an upright clump and may gently self-seed where conditions suit.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun or partial shade in average to fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It performs particularly well in light woodland conditions and tolerates most soil types. Deadhead to extend flowering and limit self-seeding, or leave some seed heads to develop a natural colony.
Uses
Well suited to woodland edges, cottage gardens, mixed borders, beneath open shrubs and naturalistic pollinator planting.
