Sometimes called Cappadocian navelwort, Omphalodes cappadocica is a hardy evergreen woodland perennial producing clouds of vivid blue, white-eyed flowers in spring. Growing around 20–25 cm tall, it forms a spreading leafy carpet without racing through the garden like some more aggressive groundcovers. It comes from the woodlands of northern Turkey, including the historic region of Cappadocia. Its botanical name refers to the small, navel-shaped fruits that follow the flowers.
Growing Conditions
A robust and accommodating plant for partial or full shade. It performs best in humus-rich soil that retains some moisture, but established plants cope well in ordinary garden soil provided it is not permanently waterlogged or allowed to become bone dry. It is very frost hardy and needs little ongoing attention.
Uses
Useful beneath trees and shrubs, along shaded paths, at the front of woodland borders and as an evergreen groundcover among spring bulbs.
