Known as Chincherinchee, this South African bulb produces elegant spikes of white flowers, often marked with green or dark centres, in late spring and early summer. The flowering stems reach approximately 30–50 cm and are superb for cutting—the blooms can remain fresh in a vase for several weeks. Its species name, thyrsoides, describes the dense, branching arrangement of the flowers. The foliage dies away after flowering as the bulb enters dormancy.
Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun in fertile, freely drained soil, watering while leaves and flower stems are actively growing. Keep drier once the foliage begins to die back. This is not a reliably frost-hardy bulb in colder inland gardens, so plant it in a warm, sheltered position or grow it in containers that can be protected during winter.
Uses
Excellent for dedicated cutting gardens, sunny borders, sheltered courtyards and containers. The long-lasting stems are particularly valuable for floral arrangements.
