Also known by its synonym Tithonia speciosa, Mexican sunflower is a vigorous annual producing fiery orange-red, daisy-like flowers from midsummer until frost. Native to Mexico and Central America, it can grow 1.5–2 m tall in a single season, forming a bold, branching plant that is constantly visited by bees and butterflies. Despite its common name, it is not a true sunflower, although both belong to the daisy family. Frost ends its season, but plants may self-seed where conditions suit.
Growing Conditions
Sow or plant in full sun once the danger of frost has passed. It thrives in heat and ordinary, freely drained soil, tolerating drought once established. Avoid excessive feeding, which produces huge leafy plants at the expense of flowers. Give it room and shelter from strong winds, as mature stems can become brittle.
Uses
Ideal for the back of large borders, annual screens, hot-coloured planting, pollinator gardens and sunny vegetable-garden edges. Its rapid growth is useful for filling new or temporary garden spaces.
