Mediterranean throatwort produces broad, airy domes made up of hundreds of tiny violet-blue flowers from summer into autumn. Growing around 70–90 cm tall, it is an outstanding cut flower with long stems and a vase life often exceeding a week. The name throatwort comes from the plant’s historical association with remedies for throat ailments. Although naturally a short-lived perennial, it is generally best treated as an annual in colder inland gardens because it is not reliably hardy through heavy frost.
Growing Conditions
Grow in full sun or light partial shade in fertile, freely drained soil. Water regularly during active growth, particularly when flower stems are developing, but do not leave the roots waterlogged. Cutting or deadheading finished flower heads encourages later stems. Choose a sheltered position and protect overwintering plants from frost.
Uses
A valuable plant for cutting gardens, mixed borders, florist-style plantings and large containers. The soft flower heads add volume and texture to both fresh and dried arrangements.
