While Centranthus ruber is a beautiful and adaptable perennial, it has shown invasive tendencies in some parts of New Zealand--particularly in drier regions like Canterbury, Otago, Marlborough, and parts of Nelson/Tasman. In these areas, it can self-seed prolifically and spread into rocky or coastal habitats where it may compete with native species. In gardens, it's best managed by removing spent flower heads before seed set and avoiding planting near wild or unmanaged areas if you're in a sensitive region.
