Allium sphaerocephalon

Commonly known as drumstick allium, this distinctive ornamental onion produces dense, egg-shaped flower heads that emerge green before gradually maturing to rich burgundy-purple. Flowering in early to mid-summer, the slender stems rise well above narrow foliage, creating movement and contrast amongst grasses and perennial borders. Native to Europe and western Asia, it thrives in sunny, free-draining sites and is remarkably tolerant of dry conditions once established. The foliage dies back before flowering, allowing the colourful blooms to appear as if suspended above neighbouring plants. Its unusual flower shape and ability to naturalise gently make it a favourite for meadow-style plantings.
