Scilla hyacinthoides

Tall flower stems carry up to a hundred small violet-blue stars above broad, strap-like foliage in early to mid-spring. Native from southern Europe through to northern Iraq, this impressive bulb is properly known as hyacinth squill and should not be confused with the much shorter Spanish bluebell that was historically sold under several Scilla names. It is a very frost-hardy, deciduous bulb that gradually forms expanding colonies, while its foliage naturally yellows and disappears as the plant enters summer dormancy. Once dormant, established bulbs cope well with dry summer conditions. Height 80–100 cm in flower.
Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun in freely draining soil, setting bulbs at approximately two to three times their own depth. Water during active spring growth but avoid persistently wet ground. Allow the foliage to yellow and die away naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following season.
Uses
Excellent for naturalising through sunny borders, meadow-style planting, gravel gardens and beneath deciduous trees where spring light is plentiful.
